School Plan Update; Committee Creation

November 11, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Last night the Board of Trustees held its regular monthly meeting (watch it here). While we were working through the agenda, Southwest District Health updated its COVID-19 risk categories, placing Canyon County back into Red.

As you know, our published reopening plan calls for online learning while we are in Red, and allows for some time to transition between online, hybrid or in-person full-time learning. The board voted to amend our current plan to include hybrid as an option in Red, and to stay in hybrid through the Thanksgiving break. The board also directed the superintendent to convene a Stay Open committee of teachers and parents. The task of the committee is to identify the metrics for moving into hybrid or remote while in Red.

Other changes in the reopening plan approved by the board last night include alignment with current Southwest District Health guidance, and a clearer definition of quarantine and isolation, as well as clarification on face coverings and approved exceptions. Face masks continue to be mandatory for staff and students. Gaiters and face masks with valves are not approved by the CDC; face shields are allowable in the following specific situations:

  • Students with 504 or IEP accommodations
  • Staff with approved ADA accommodations
  • Students and staff while working on phonics instruction

Please work with your administrator if you have any questions.

The trustees spent a great deal of time last night learning about and discussing the results of our recent surveys. These surveys were designed to help us all understand our parents’ and teachers’ comfort levels related to in-person schedules. Although we can guess where concerns lie on both sides of the aisle, the Board expressed a need to understand the motivation behind the data.

Members of the Stay Open committee must be willing to work collaboratively with others whose opinions differ from their own and to attend all meetings. It’s important that this committee reflect a broad cross section of experiences and opinions so that all voices are heard. In order to ensure balance, we also need to know whether or not you support hybrid learning in the Red.

If you would like to be considered for a spot on the Stay Open committee, please fill out this form by noon Thursday, Nov. 12. Those chosen to be on the committee will be informed later that day. Following is our tentative meeting schedule:

  • 3-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13.
  • 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17
  • 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19

Thank you
