Students in Laura Crawford’s fifth-grade class at Lake Ridge Elementary School wanted to improve the school’s appearance while also attracting birds, bees and butterflies. So they chose to plant a pollinator garden as their fall “passion project.”

They began by getting the area ready to garden by removing the bark chips and weed barrier. Next they prepared the soil and added fertilizer. On the third day they were able spread manure donated by a classmate and plant flowers donated by Home Depot, parents and students.

The class is watering the plants twice a day, in the morning and in the afternoon, and looking forward to seeing their garden growing and attracting pollinators.
