Nampa School District Superintendent David Peterson
Regarding the Joint Finance and Appropriation Committees Action
March 27, 2015
"Today is a big day for Idaho school children including – maybe especially – Nampa’s kids. If adopted, the recommendations of the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee will help us continue the strong progress we are making.
I am pleased by the committee's focus on restoring funding for schools and increasing teacher pay. I appreciate both the amount of the education increases, and the way in which the increased funds are allocated. I am especially pleased the committee members worked with the State Department of Education to free up additional dollars to exceed the Governor’s recommendation for operational funding.
Clearly, I encourage the House and Senate to adopt the plan, and the Governor to sign it.
This is good news for Nampa as we continue to make progress financially, organizationally and instructionally. I am hopeful that the increases in state funding can help reduce our dependency on operational funding and supplemental levies to pay teachers, freeing these resources to do some needed renewal of instructional materials and technology.
There will still be some uncertainty, even with legislative and Governor approval. In particular, we have a lot of work to do to understand the details and implications of the Career Ladder.
Our rough estimates are the increase in operational funds will provide Nampa slightly over $1 million in additional funding. Proposed restoration of lottery and safe schools funding and increases in technology and professional development support would all help Nampa move forward.
In the coming weeks, I will be engaging staff, the community, and parents in a discussion to identify priorities for new funding and how to align our funding to meet our goals.
Those sessions are:
- Staff: Tuesday, March 31 - 3 p.m. & 4:15 p.m., East Valley Middle School
- Staff: Tuesday, April 7 - 3 p.m. & 4:15 p.m., Lone Star Middle School
- Parents/Community: Tuesday, April 7 - 6:30 p.m., Lone Star Middle School
- Parents/Community: Thursday, April 9 - 6:30 p.m., Columbia High School
