CLASS IS IN SESSION: 11 Nampa schools now offer free breakfast, lunch to all students
By IDAHO PRESS-TRIBUNE STAFF
firstname.lastname@example.org NAMPA — School was back in session Tuesday for the Nampa School District, and one new change is coming to nearly a dozen schools.
The district will provide free lunch this year to all students in 11 of its schools and program.
Every school in the district has offered free breakfast to children for the past eight years, because of the high poverty rate in Nampa. This year, students at those 11 schools and programs will also get a free lunch for the first time, thanks to a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a program called the Community Eligibility Provision, said district spokeswoman Allison Westfall.
“This is good for kids because hunger can get in the way of learning, and we want all of those barriers taken away so the kids can be in the classroom and be focused,” she said. “So they can come, have a healthy breakfast and a healthy lunch and focus on learning.”
Students who attend a school that’s not on the list can still apply to qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.
The eligible schools and programs for the free lunch include:
n Centennial Elementary
n Central Elementary
n Endeavor Elementary
n Iowa Elementary
n Greenhurst Elementary and Nampa Early Preschool Program
n Park Ridge Elementary
n Snake River Elementary
n Sherman Elementary n Gateway Elementary and Secondary Program
n Union High School (the district’s new alternative school)
